Marine air conditioning is a different animal than the system in your house. Instead of an outdoor fan pushing air across a condenser coil, your boat's AC pulls lake water through an intake, a sea strainer, and a raw-water pump to carry heat away. That design works great — until Grand Lake's algae, silt, and zebra mussels get involved. Check Shore Power and Breakers First

Start at the dock pedestal: is the shore-power breaker on and the cord seated firmly at both ends? Then check the boat's AC panel — marine AC usually has its own breaker, and some systems have a separate breaker for the raw-water pump. A half-tripped breaker or a corroded shore-power connection is the cheapest "repair" there is.

Warning sign: If the breaker trips again right after you reset it, stop resetting it. Repeated trips mean a hard-starting compressor, a failing capacitor, or a wiring problem — and every reset risks more damage. That's a call-us situation.

Look for the Overboard Discharge Stream

This is the single most useful marine AC check, and it takes ten seconds. With the AC running, walk the dock and look for the thru-hull fitting on the hull side where the cooling water exits. You should see a steady, healthy stream of water going overboard. Weak dribble or nothing at all? Your system isn't getting the water flow it needs to cool — and it will overheat, trip off on high pressure, or just blow warm air.

Why it matters: No water flow is the #1 cause of marine AC failures we see on Grand Lake. Everything downstream of this check — strainer, pump, intake — exists to keep that stream flowing.

Inspect the Sea Strainer (Zebra Mussel Alert)

Somewhere between the water intake and the pump is a sea strainer — usually a clear or bronze canister with a basket inside. On Grand Lake, that basket collects algae, silt, weeds, and increasingly zebra mussels, which have spread across the lake and love to colonize intakes and strainers. A packed strainer chokes off water flow just like a clogged filter chokes your home AC.

If you're comfortable doing it: turn the AC off, close the seacock, open the strainer, pull and rinse the basket, reseat it, reopen the seacock, and restart. If any of that sentence sounded like a foreign language, leave it alone — an improperly reseated strainer or an open seacock mishap can let water into the boat.

Check the Return-Air Filter and Vents

Just like at home, marine AC has a return-air filter — usually a small screen behind a grille near the unit, often under a berth or settee. Boat cabins collect dust, pet hair, and carpet fibers in a tiny space, so these filters clog faster than you'd think. A blocked return makes the system freeze up or short-cycle. Rinse or vacuum the screen, and make sure supply vents aren't blocked by cushions or gear.

Listen to the Raw-Water Pump

With the AC calling for cooling, the raw-water pump should run smoothly and quietly. A pump that's screeching, rattling, or silent when it should be running is failing or has lost its prime (an airlock — common after the boat's been hauled or heeled). A dead pump means zero water flow, and running the system that way cooks the compressor.

Rule of thumb: If the pump sounds wrong or there's still no discharge stream after cleaning the strainer, shut the AC off and leave it off. The repair is affordable; a replacement compressor is not.

Know When to Stop and Call

If shore power is good, the strainer is clean, the pump runs, the discharge stream looks healthy, and the cabin is still hot — the problem is inside the sealed system: low refrigerant from a leak, a fouled condenser coil, a failing compressor, or a control-board issue. Those aren't DIY territory, especially in a cramped bilge on a floating vessel.
