Your home near Grand Lake should be a peaceful sanctuary, not a concert hall for mysterious clanks, bangs, and whistles. Every HVAC system makes a gentle hum when cycling on, but when a new, aggressive noise disrupts your evening on Monkey Island or Grove, it's usually your system crying out for help.

Ignoring these sounds rarely makes them go away. In fact, what might start as a cheap preventative fix can quickly spiral into a total compressor failure. Here is a quick guide to decoding what your heater or air conditioner is trying to tell you.

Squealing or Screeching

If your indoor unit sounds like metal scraping on metal or a high-pitched squeal, shut it off immediately. This is almost always caused by a failing blower motor or a worn-out fan belt (in older units). The bearings in the motor can grind together when they lose lubrication. Continuing to run the system will cause the motor to burn out entirely, turning a minor repair into a major expense.

Banging, Clanking, or Rattling

A loud rattling from the outdoor condenser unit is common after Grand Lake summer storms. A twig, acorn, or thick piece of debris may have fallen into the fan grate and is currently being struck by the spinning fan blades.

However, if the banging sounds heavy or metallic, suspect a loose part. It could be a failing compressor internally knocking, or an unbalanced indoor blower wheel that is wobbling dangerously inside its housing. This requires immediate professional AC repair.

Hissing or Bubbling

A persistent hissing sound near the indoor unit or the outside condenser line set usually indicates a refrigerant leak. Under pressure, the escaping gas creates that hissing noise. If your home isn't cooling properly and you hear this sound, do not keep adjusting the thermostat lower. Low refrigerant heavily strains the compressor.

💡 Protect the Peace and Quiet

Strange noises are the ultimate early-warning system. Don't wait for a catastrophic failure. Grand Lake homeowners in our Llama Loyalty Club receive regular bi-annual tune-ups where we catch these worn bearings and loose belts long before they start screaming at you.
